Game Preview: Spurs vs Hawks
The San Antonio Spurs head to Atlanta to take on the Hawks on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET. San Antonio is set to play in Detroit on Friday night – as this is written before – while Atlanta is coming off a 116-107 win over the Phoenix Suns on Thursday.
Spurs Trade Poeltl At Deadline
San Antonio was a clear seller at the deadline as the Spurs look to improve their odds for the lottery and hope to get the first overall pick. San Antonio is currently 14-41 and in 14th in the West which is one game up on the Houston Rockets while before their back-to-back, the Spurs are 5-20 on the road and on a 10-game losing skid. San Antonio is averaging 112.3 PPG while allowing 122.4 PPG which ranks 30th while being led by Keldon Johnson who’s averaging 21.7 PPG, Devin Vassell is averaging 19.4 PPG, and Tre Jones is averaging 12.8 PPG.
Before the Spurs’ game against Detroit, San Antonio suffered a 112-98 loss to the Toronto Raptors. After the game, San Antonio traded Jakob Poeltl to the Raptors at the deadline while also dealing Josh Richardson to New Orleans. In the loss to Toronto, the Spurs were led by Johnson who had 22 points, Doug McDemott had 13 points off the bench, and Keita Bates-Diop had 10 points.
San Antonio will be without Vassell, while Jones, Langford, and Schoan are all listed as questionable. Johnson, Devonte Graham, Khem Birch, and Charles Bassey are listed as day-to-day.
Hawks In Play-In Spot
Atlanta is coming off a win over the Phoenix Suns on Thursday in a game the Hawks got out to a 36-22 lead. At the end of the third quarter, Atlanta led 93-75 and played their bench in the fourth quarter and was outscored 32-23 in the final frame. In the win, the Hawks were led by Trae Young who had 36 points and 12 assists, Dejounte Murray had 19 points, John Collins had 16 points, Clint Capela grabbed 17 rebounds, and off the bench, Onyeka Okongwu had 11 points, and 11 rebounds.
The Hawks are currently in 8th place in the East and 2.5 games back of sixth in the East and 2 games up on 11th place so are comfortably in a play-in spot. Atlanta is currently 28-28 and at home the Hawks are 14-11 while averaging 116.1 PPG which ranks 8th while allowing 116.4 PPG which ranks 20th. Atlanta has been led by Young who’s averaging 27 PPG, Murray is averaging 21.1 PPG, De’Andre Hunter is chipping in with 15.5 PPG, while Bogdan Bogdanovic is averaging 14.9 PPG and John Collins is averaging 13.3 PPG while Capela is averaging a double-double with 11.9 PPG and 11.5 rebounds.
Atlanta will be without Garrison Matthews while Saddiq Bey, Bruno Fernandes and Aaron Holiday are all listed as day-to-day.
