Converge goes for a share for second place when it takes on Phoenix

The FiberXers now intend to stay right on track for another goal when they tangle with the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Already assured of a post-eliminations berth Converge sets its sights on a second straight win and seventh in nine games overall that should earn it another reward, which is a twice-to-beat advantage given to the top four teams in the eight-team quarterfinals.

Phoenix has a far humbler but more difficult objective, which is to boost its current 2-5 record and continue racking up the wins needed to make it among the last eight.

More important for coach Jamike Jarin is for his Fuel Masters to continue playing as one and keep on improving with each game.

“We’re just taking it game by game. As you’ve seen, with the seven games that we’ve played, no matter what the score is, we just give it our best,” said Jarin.

“It’s always been a collective effort… kasi iyun ang culture we’re trying to develop – and ‘yung fighting heart,” added Jarin.

“Kasi we have a very young team so there will be growing pains. But we’re happy with what we’ve been doing. Of course, it could be better with wins. But as long as we have a chance we’ll continue to keep learning and giving it our best.”

Converge has already shown it is very capable of dishing out sterling all-around performances, getting off to a 4-0 start in the tournament before prevailing over Blackwater, 98-90, last Thursday to clinch a playoffs spot.

Although admittedly grateful for securing the berth, coach Aldin Ayo maintained the work is far from over for his FiberXers. “We still have to work on our game,” he stated following the Bossing game.

“I always tell the players to continue building our team because it doesn’t really stop,” added Ayo. “As long as in contention ka kailangan nabubuo ‘yung team. Ang dami pa naming kulang so ang dami pa naming kailangang trabahuhin.”

Phoenix should prove to be a tough nut to crack, what with Du’vaughnn Maxwell set to atone for his ejection in a 125-100 win over Terrafirma and Javee Mocon expected to churn out a more commendable performance than in his 13-point, four-assist conference debut versus the Dyip.

“Imagine if he was with us in the first six games,” posed Jarin. “It doesn’t guarantee us a win but he would have been a big help, offensively and defensively.”
