Celtics Rule Out Two Starters for Jazz Matchup
The Celtics will be extremely shorthanded on Saturday night when they face off against the Utah Jazz on the second half of a back-to-back thanks to a crowded injury report.
Starting center Al Horford, who has not played in back-to-back games all year long as a precaution has been ruled out. The veteran played low minutes (27) in Friday’s win against the Blazers and opened the door for him to make an appearance on Saturday night in Utah but the team ruled him out on Saturday afternoon.
Marcus Smart was also ruled out due to due a left hip contusion. He played through their illness in Boston’s 14-point win over the Blazers on Friday night.
“This morning. I woke up, getting ready to come to shootaround and just didn’t feel right,” Smart said Friday night. “And just wasn’t feeling (like) myself. They just wanted to make sure everything was good, let me get some rest, some fluids in my system. I felt a little bit better, enough to play. And we just tried to, whatever I could give, get out there and give it. If I start to feel bad, then we’ll handle it when we handle it.”
Robert Williams will miss his eighth straight game with a hamstring injury while Payton Pritchard will sit out his sixth straight game due to a sore heel. Williams is hoping to return before the end of Boston’s road trip while there is no timetable yet on Pritchard’s return. Danilo Gallinari remains out as he continues to rehab from a torn ACL.
The team will get Malcolm Brogdon back in the lineup after he sat out Friday’s win with a sore Achilles.
The Celtics will have a chance to clinch a playoff spot on Saturday night in Utah when they go against the Utah Jazz, a team that features ties to Boston with former assistant Will Hardy and former president of basketball operations Danny Ainge.
“We’ll always have a great relationship,” Tatum said of Ainge on Friday night. “I’m very thankful for him. Essentially took a chance on a 19-year-old kid and drafted me and made my dream come true. I’ll always be thankful for that, regardless of wherever I’m at, wherever he’s at. I’ll always remember him in that way. He was kind of the guy that made the decision to help my dream come true. So I’m very thankful for that.”
