Game Preview: Memphis Grizzlies vs. Portland Trail Blazers
Western Conference foes Memphis and Portland meet in the Rose City on Friday night in the opener of the NBA in-season tournament. The Grizzlies (0-5 SU, 1-4 ATS) dropped their fifth straight game to open the season, 133-109, on Wednesday at Utah. The Trail Blazers (2-3 SU, 2-3 ATS) picked up their second straight win, 110-101, at Detroit on Wednesday night. This is the first of two games in Portland between these two this weekend, the second coming on Sunday. Friday night’s tip from the Moda Center is 10:10 EST.
Memphis last winless team
The Grizzlies have had a disastrous start, standing as the last team in the NBA without a win while their star player – Ja Morant – serves out a suspension that will last until last December. Versus the Jazz they shot just 36.5% from the field and 25.9% from three-point range. They never held the lead in the game and were down by 35 at one point. They’ve shot just 42.1% overall this season and are averaging 106.6 points per game.
For the third time this season, Desmond Bane led the offense in scoring, shooting 7-19 overall for 21 points. The guard is averaging a team-high 24.6 points per game, averaging 3.4 three points shots made per game. On the defensive side of the ball, new point guard Marcus Smart has logged 3.2 steals per game, the best average in the NBA.
Overall, the Grizzlies’ defense is giving up 118 points per game through their first five, allowing their opponents to shoot 48.1% from the field and 43.4% from three. They have allowed an average of 17.8 three-point shots to be made against them each game, the most in the league. Memphis averaged 43.6 rebounds per game, 6.6 blocks and 9.8 steals. They are turning the ball over 15.2 times per game, on average, and committing 21.4 fouls, tied for ninth most.
Portland gets off the mat
The Trail Blazers were punched in the mouth a bit with three straight losses out of the gate but rebounded well with a pair of nine-points victories. Against Detroit they shot 46.9% from the field, leading to their second-highest point total of the season. They have averaged just 103 points over their first five games, tying them with the Knicks for lowest average in the league. They’re shooting 33.3% from the field and 29.3% from three, making just 8.8 three-point shots per game, the lowest mark in the NBA.
Second-year guard Shaedon Sharpe led the club with 29 points in the win over the Pistons. He has led the team in scoring three times this season and his 20.2 points per game leads the team. DeAndre Ayton posted his third double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds. The Portland center is tied for the league lead with 14 rebounds per game.
On defense, the Blazers are allowing 108.6 points per game, the 12th best mark in the NBA. Teams have shot 46.2% from the field and 34.5% from three against Portland this season. They are averaging 44.8 rebounds, with 12.8 offensive rebounds per game. Portland is tied for fourth, coughing up 15.8 turnovers per game and their 20.8 fouls per game are tied for 13th most.
