Game Preview: Boston Celtics vs. Brooklyn Nets

Atlantic Division foes are set to tip off on Saturday night when the Boston Celtics (4-0, 2-1-1 ATS) travel to take on the Brooklyn Nets (2-2, 4-0 ATS). Brooklyn will be on the tail end of a back-to-back, as they play in Chicago on Friday night. The Celtics just scored the second most points in franchise history with a 155-104 win over Indiana as 12.5-point favorites. Brooklyn played in Miami on Wednesday, defeating the Heat 109-105 as 6.5-point dogs. The Celtics won three out of four matchups against the Nets last season. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 EST from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Celtics Look Unbeatable

No NBA team will ever go undefeated, but if Boston could shoot they way they did against Indiana, no one would ever beat them. The Celtics dropped 155 points, they shot 56.8% from the field, 57.1% from three, and 96.4% from the free throw line. These are not from small sample sizes either. Boston made 20 threes and 27 free throws and still shot at those percentages. Jayson Tatum led the way in scoring with 30 points, and five other Celtics scored at least 13 points.

Tatum leads the Celtics in scoring with 29.8 points per game, which is 6th in the NBA. He has scored 20 plus in every game this season and rebounds well from the forward position with 9.3 per game. Tatum has also been the top outside shooter for Boston, he is making 3.3 triples per game on 40.6% shooting. Jaylen Brown is also playing well this season, averaging 22.5 points per game with 6.3 RPG. The Celtics lineup is top heavy, the starters all average at least 13 points, while no one off the bench averages more than seven. Kristaps Porzingis is enjoying his role with his new team, adding 18.8 PPG and 7.3 RPG.

Jrue Holiday is an elite defender, he fills the void left behind from Marcus Smart. Holiday averages 13.0 PPG, and leads the team in blocks with 1.8 per. Derrick White is the fifth starter, he is an excellent role player for this team with 15.8 PPG. The top scorers off the bench have been Sam Hauser and Peyton Pritchard, while Al Horford is seeing his minutes decrease. Boston is playing at the 9th fastest pace in the league according to dunksandthrees.com, they are averaging 101.8 possessions per game.

Nets Riddled With Injuries

This will only be the 6th game of the season for Brooklyn, but the coaching staff is already in midseason form juggling their roster trying to find healthy bodies to play. Nic Claxton and Cameron Johnson were day one starters, but are already both out with injuries. Armoni Brooks was already called up from the G-League, and 14 players have already checked into the game this year for Brooklyn. The Nets are on the second half of a back to back, after playing in the In-Season Tournament against Chicago.

Cam Thomas is the leading scorer for Brooklyn at 28.0 PPG. Thomas appears to be having a breakout season, he only averaged 10 PPG last year. Mikal Bridges is slated to be the best player on the team, he is an excellent defender on the wing and is averaging 20.8 PPG. Bridges is playing 35 minutes a game for Brooklyn and also averages 6.0 RPG and 4.0 APG. After missing most of the past few seasons, Ben Simmons has played in every game this year. He has always been a good playmaker and rebounder, he is averaging 7.5 APG and 10.2 RPG, but is only averaging 7.3 PPG, which is 10th on his own team.

Dorian Finney-Smith plays the stretch four position well. He can knock down outside shots, as he is shooting 48.1% on his three-point attempts, and is a lockdown defender with his athleticism. Finney-Smith averages 14.0 PPG. The Nets have been getting production from Lonnie Walker IV, Spencer Dinwiddie and Armoni Brooks on the perimeter as well. Brooklyn plays at the 8th fastest tempo in the league, averaging 102.0 possessions per game.
