The Toronto Raptors got a look at RJ Barrett’s tantalizing upside in a blowout victory over the Golden State Warriors on Sunday

Maybe RJ Barrett wasn’t just salary filler in the Toronto Raptors’ deal for Immanuel Quickley.

OK, it was never quite that simple.

It was clear when Toronto sent OG Anunoby to the New York Knicks last weekend that the team was targeting Quickley. The Raptors had been in desperate need of another guard and someone who could space the floor. The hope was that Quickley could provide that as a young and developing player alongside Scottie Barnes.

But the youngest player in the entire trade might have some untapped upside too.

Barrett was phenomenal Sunday night in a 133-118 blowout victory over the Golden State Warriors. He had a season-high 37 points on 13-for-20 shooting with six assists and looked every bit like someone who’ll be part of Toronto’s long-term core alongside Barnes and Quickley.

Despite being in his fifth NBA season, Barrett is somehow just 23 years old, a year older than Barnes. Sure, the shine of being the No. 3 pick has worn off, but the 6-foot-6 forward has shown flashes of what scouts once thought he could be.

There’s not really a glaring hole in Barrett’s game. He can dribble, shoot, and play make for others. He’s comfortable running the pick-and-roll, leading the transition, and if you need him to spot up, he can do that too. He’s not great in any of those areas, save for maybe transition scoring, but he’s fine.

Barrett’s biggest issue has always been efficiency. Save for his sophomore season, he’s never been a good three-point shooter and he’s yet to put up even league-average shooting numbers from the field.

But Toronto is hoping to fix that by moving Barrett down the offensive pecking order.

Consider Barrett’s shot diet against the Warriors, he rained down five first-half three-pointers, all assisted. Of his 10 made first-half field goals, almost all were assisted makes or transition buckets.
