NorthPort struggle for a win, faces Beermen

San Miguel Beer seeks a quick turnaround from a loss Saturday as it tangles with victory-starved NorthPort in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the MOA Arena in Pasay City Wednesday.

Smarting from a 107-103 defeat at the hands of the Converge FiberXers, the Beermen are bent on getting back on track right away as they brace for a tough showdown with titleholder Barangay Ginebra Friday over at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The overriding goal is to stay in front in the fight for the Top Four which will enjoy a twice-to-beat incentive in the quarterfinals.

“We have to bounce back, yan ang pinaka-importante,” said San Miguel coach Jorge Gallent after the loss that dropped them to a tie with the FiberXers and the TNT Tropang Giga at 5-1. Ginebra, meanwhile, is at 3-1.

“We’re still tied for No. 1. We have to go up again,” said Gallent, adding they have to learn from their mistakes against Converge.

“We committed a lot of fouls and gave up 21 free throws in the fourth quarter so we have to learn from that and defend better,” said Gallent.

The Beermen were perfect under their new bench chieftain until that loss to Converge marked by the early exit on fouls by main man June Mar Fajardo.

Gallent stressed, though, that Fajardo’s exit was not the lone reason.

Fajardo and his teammates are determined to make up for the slide and are heavily favored against the NorthPort side which is winless in five starts under new coach Boni Tan.

The Batang Pier’s woes continued with a 115-100 beating from the Gin Kings Friday despite 30 points from the returning Robert Bolick and 38 markers from new import Kevin Murphy.
